Economics of Oregon Forests and Documentary

Come and join Lincoln Co. Community Rights and Citizens for a Healthy County in welcoming economist Ernie Niemi from Eugene who will speak about "Oregon Forestry and What you Can Expect."

An Oregon Idyll

Citing federal and state data, Niemi will demonstrate that Oregon's timber industry contributes far less to the state's economy than, for example, the outdoor recreation industry. Too often ignored entirely are the collateral costs of logging practices when they increase atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate change, degrade streams essential for fish habitat, foul drinking water, and reduce residential property values. Despite its diminishing place in our economy, the timber industry wields vastly disproportionate influence over local and state policies.

Economic truths are especially important now, Niemi says, when "reputable news outlets carry unending stories about distortions of science and facts intended to protect big industries and allow them to continue degrading the environment."

Mr Niemi's presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.

The program will end with a screening of the award-winning documentary film "Behind the Emerald Curtain," filmed in our own Coast Range.
